In recent years we have seen a surge of VR games coming out of the gaming industry. However, there is still a lack of popular VR games from AAA gaming studios. Half-Life: Alyx can be considered the last AAA VR game that was released in 2020. Since then, many modders have taken it upon themselves to make VR game mods for some of the most popular PC games.

Many regular PC games are playable in VR either through native support or with mods. For a complete list of modded PC games with VR mods, check out our list of all flatscreen VR games. Fortunately, most of these VR game mods can be downloaded for free. However, some mods might be locked behind a paywall.

7 Best VR Mods

Over the years, modders have added VR support for many popular PC games. Playing these games in VR is an entirely different experience that a gamer shouldn’t miss out on.

1. REAL VR Mods – GTA V, Cyberpunk 2077, RDR2, and more

REAL VR is one of the most famous PC VR mods out there. Modder Luke Ross started the REAL VR mod by making No One Lives Forever 2 and GTA V playable in VR for free. Since then, he has added VR support to many other popular games. Unfortunately, his other mods are only available through his Patreon account.

However, he had to discontinue support for GTA V, RDR2, and Mafia Trilogy due to legal issues. Fortunately, older versions of his mods areavailable on the Internet Archivefor prosperity and can still be used. The latest version of the REAL mod supports the following games:

  • Dark Souls Remastered
  • Cyberpunk 2077
  • Final Fantasy VII Remake
  • Ghost Runner
  • Elden Ring
  • Ghostwire: Tokyo
  • Horizon: Zero Dawn

2. REFramework VR Mod – Resident Evil, DMC5, MHR

REFramework is another excellent PC VR mod that has made all recent Resident Evil games playable in VR. The mod adds VR support to all games made in RE Engine by Capcom. It includes all modern Resident Evil games, Devil May Cry 5, and Monster Hunter Rise. While RE7 and RE8 have official VR support, they are exclusive to PSVR.

The PC VR mod also adds a first-person mode to Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3, which are both traditionally third-person games. Users can use the mod to play all Resident Evil games with motion controllers in VR. There’s a chance that the mod will also support the upcoming Resident Evil 4 Remake. The latest version of the REFramework mod supports the following games:

  • Resident Evil 2 Remake
  • Resident Evil 3 Remake
  • Resident Evil 7
  • Resident Evil Village
  • Devil May Cry 5
  • Monster Hunter Rise

3. Vivecraft & QuestCraft – Minecraft VR Mods

Minecraft is yet another amazing game to be played in VR. While Minecraft has official VR support on Windows, it lacks many features. The Vivecraft mod gives users an authentic Minecraft VR experience. It also supports Forge mods and room-scale VR.

The VR mod allows players to interact physically with the world by using their arms to break blocks and attack mobs. The only limitation is that multiplayer requires all players to install Vivecraft VR. There’s also a standalone version of this mod called QuestCraft for Meta Quest headsets.

4. Half-Life Series – Lambda1VR & Source VR Mods

Modders have also added VR support to the original Half-Life and Half-Life 2. The original Half-Life was ported to the Meta Quest headset by the talented DrBeef and the larger Team Beef outfit. It is a standalone VR game that can be played on Quest without a PC.

On the other hand, the Half-Life 2 VR mod is available on Steam for free. Users must own the original games to play these fantastic VR mods. These VR ports also have complete motion control so players can properly aim and fire guns in-game. The Source VR Mod is also bringing Half-Life 2: VR Episodes One and Two to Steam for free.

5. Unreal Engine VR Injector Mod – All Unreal Engine Games

Unreal Engine VR Injector is an upcoming VR mod that aims to make Unreal Engine games playable in VR. At the time of writing, the mod is currently under development by Modder Praydog, the maker of REFramework. The VR mod is occasionally showcased by Flat2VR modding community in different Unreal Engine games.

It uses a full in-engine 6DOF movement, synced eye rendering, a detached look, and various other features. According to Flat2VR, it is even possible for modders to add full motion controls in specific games with this VR mod. The VR mod can only work with games made on Unreal Engine 4/5, so don’t expect any classic games.

6. Subnautica: Below Zero – Native VR Mod

The original Subnautica received official VR support, but that’s not the case for the sequel. Fortunately, modders from the Flat2VR community released a VR mod for Subnautica: Below Zero. The game looks absolutely stunning in VR, with fun swimming mechanics and captivating visuals.

The only limitation of this mod is that it didn’t feature motion controller support at launch. However, the developer has been working on adding more motion controller support and other features.
